Exploring Familiar Grounds

The trees are starting to look more barren in the woods, but the sound of children’s chatter quickly fills the air. Every Wednesday, our youngest students set out for Walkabout Wednesday—a weekly routine that invites them to journey into nature, observe the changing world around them, and grow comfortable in the familiar paths they revisit.

As we stepped into the woods today, the children were eager to share sightings from past adventures:
“I once saw a blue jay!”
“Well, we spotted a girl cardinal in a nest!”
“I remember this place!”

Though the landscape shifts with each season, the children are beginning to recognize landmarks and rhythms. It’s perfect this way—taking the time to connect with nature, with what’s beneath our feet and what’s above our heads.

Today we reached an interesting choice point: continue along our usual path, or traverse a fallen log into a ravine. 🪵

The group naturally split—some adventurous souls bravely balanced along the log, while others chose the safer path around it. It was endearing to witness their instinctive support of one another: offering hands, cheering on peers, and honoring each person’s comfort level.

And here we saw a beautiful Montessori moment in action: freedom within limits. The children were allowed to choose their route—within safe boundaries—practicing independence, self-awareness, and decision-making in real time. Each path offered its own learning, and each child honored their own readiness.

When we come to crossroads in life, which path do we choose? Today reminded us that whether we take the familiar route or the adventurous one, there is always camaraderie, courage, and support along the way. 🌳✨

What paths have you chosen lately?
