Super Heros
“Mrs. Davidson, I’m going to save the world!”, a child eagerly shouted to me. I thought, “You’re absolutely right!” Children have the best imaginations and the best of intentions. Why not show them all of the things they can do!
In a Montessori environment, we focus on independence as a means to strengthen self-esteem. I believe that a child of 4 who tells me today that she’s going to save the world, will actually do it. Maybe it won’t be because we asked her to hang up her coat on her own or clean up after herself, but it will be because she feels good about who she is. She has confidence in what she can do.
I am inspired and in awe of the beauty and wonder of childhood and I sense my own responsibility. At 18, your child may not remember the 20 steps to washing his hands at a stand, but he will have a deep sense of being able to carry out tasks. She may not recall afternoons of picking up trash around the school, but she will know that she has a responsibility to the earth.
I hope that each child will know, truly know that he is a part of something bigger than himself. Your child is a future superhero! It’s my pleasure to watch what they can dream of now and I can’t wait to see what they will accomplish later!
